A system of obtaining geometric shapes of three dimensional objects using projection type multi-slit beam topography is suggested and practically implemented to measure the three dimensional shape of human faces. This system is developed for sculptor robot system to be exhibited in 93' Taejeon EXPO. Its measuring principle is based on geometrical optics between slit beam planes and the camera. Presented measuring algorithm is newly proposed in which multi planes for camera calibration are used to consider the distorsion of camera lens and obtain the world coordinates of an object to be measured. This method can be easily implemented and is found very effective in terms of measuring time and resolution being compared with conventional contact type digitization technique using coordinate measuring machine. Experimental results show that this system is practically suitable for the three dimensional profile measurement of human faces.
