Solution structures of several telomeric DNA oligonucleotides were determined by NMR experiments. Oxitricha telomeric oligonucleotide, d($G_4T_4G_4$), formed hairpin structure in monomeric state. Four GG reverse-Hoogsteen base-paris were formed in stem region. The immino proton resonances from GG hairpin structure were also abserved in Tetrahymena and human telomeric loigonucleotides. These results are the first NMR evidence of GG hairpin formation and GG hairpin is the first structure which well reconcile with telomere function in vivo.
