Locomotion interface is a walking platform which enables users to navigate a virtual world using his volun-tary walking motion. Estimation of human walking speed plays an important role in controlling the virtual-reality treadmill which has small walking area. Among various gait parameters, plantar pressure progression data could have a significant relationship with walking speed of the biped. This research proposes a new walking speed estimation and treadmill control algorithm using plantar pressure progression data which is measured from wearable insole pressure sensors. The speed estimation method is derived from capturing the velocity of center of pressure during gait motion. Also, a feedforward algorithm which generates stable treadmill speed is proposed using this plantar pressure data. The system will be implemented based on this preliminary research and schematic system design, including the data-processing procedure for user experiments and the analysis of resulting data. After the implementation and user experiment, this research describes the performance and effectiveness of the proposed method.
