Ni nanoparticles were synthesized by a colloidal method using organic surface-capping agents and used to catalyze the selective hydrogenation of unsaturated furanic aldehydes to unsaturated furanic alcohols. Among the various size of Ni nanoparticles, the 6.8 nm Ni nanoparticles showed the highest yield in selective hydrogenation of furfural (FFR) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA). Because the smaller nanoparticles have densely packed organic ligands and the larger nanoparticles were agglomerated due to magnetic attraction, access of reactant to the surface active sites was blocked. The capped Ni nanoparticles exhibited a high FFA yield up to 96%, whereas significant over-hydrogenation to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) was observed when uncapped $Ni/SiO_2$ catalysts with similarly sized Ni nanoparticles were employed. Steric hindrance induced by the organic ligands led to selective hydrogenation of FFR to FFA. The capped Ni nanoparticles could be reused repeatedly without a significant damage of catalyst and loss in the FFA yield. They also catalyzed selective hydrogenation of other unsaturated furanic aldehydes to corresponding alcohols with high selectivity (> 90%).
