Choosing harmonious colors significantly influences the resulting quality when creating digital contents. With the emerging use of digital contents, such as presentation slides and data charts, even non-designers frequently need to choose multiple colors in daily life. However, for most people with insufficient knowledge, it is not an easy task to choose harmonious colors. We first interviewed design novices and experts to extract design considerations for interactive color recommendation system based on community-generated color palettes. In this study, we then built a color recommendation system which applied a matrix decomposition method to predict color-palette relation to validate the algorithm introduced by previous research. Based on the system evaluation results, we propose a novel method to estimate color-palette relation by averaging relation score of similar colors, reflecting cognitive distance of color space. The algorithm is flexible enough to apply to various types of color choosers and the recommendation results are more harmonious than the existing method. We also implemented an interactive color recommendation system based on the proposed algorithm; user trials showed that the recommendation system is useful for both design novices and experts.
조화로운 색채 선택은 발표 슬라이드, 문서의 도표와 같은 디지털 컨텐츠의 제작에서 중요하다. 하지만 색채와 관련한 경험과 지식이 부족한 대부분의 사람들에게 조화로운 색채를 선택하는 것이 쉬운 일이 아니다. 본 연구에서는 온라인 커뮤니티에서 생성, 공유, 평가한 색채 조합인 색채 팔레트를 활용하여 어울리는 색채를 추천하는 시스템을 디자인한다. 이를 위해 인터뷰를 바탕으로 색채 추천 시스템의 디자인 영역을 정의하고, 디자인 고려사항을 도출하였다. 본 연구에서는 선행 연구에서 제시된 행렬 인수분해 방식으로 색채-팔레트 관계를 예측하는 추천 시스템을 구현하여 그 유용성을 검증하였고, 발견된 한계를 극복하기 위해서 색 공간의 인지적인 거리를 고려해 유사 색채 평균 방식으로 미지의 색채-팔레트 관계를 예측하는 새로운 방법을 제안하였다. 본 연구에서 제안하는 알고리즘은 추천 대상 색채의 확장이 용이하여 다양한 색채 선택 도구에 쉽게 적용할 수 있으며 기존 알고리즘에 비해서 더 조화로운 색채를 더 다양한 패턴으로 추천할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 새로운 알고리즘을 적용한 추천 시스템이 비전문가와 전문가 모두에게 유용함을 확인하였다.
