This paper investigates why users purchase, invest, and mine cryptocurrency by applying the Self-Determination Theory (SDT). In the existing cryptocurrency studies, the motivation of users was not analyzed. Through an exploratory and inductive study of 15 interviewees, we were able to distinguish three motivations from each user: intrinsic, extrinsic, and hybrid motivations. Furthermore, it could be observed that the motivation of users’ changed from pure intrinsic or pure extrinsic to hybrid motivation over time. This is due to users’ tendency to look at cryptocurrency ecosystem as users who can consider both technical aspects, such as block chain and investment in high volatility. Through this study, we were able to observe the user’s synchronous changes in the cryptocurrency ecosystem and present the framework of future research.
본 학위논문은 암호화폐 사용자들의 구매, 투자 및 채굴 동기를 자기결정성 이론을 적용해 조사하고자 하였다. 기존의 암호화폐 연구들은 사용자들의 동기에 관한 연구는 초기단계로 많은 연구가 진행되지 않았다. 15명의 인터뷰 참여자를 대상으로 탐색적이고 귀납적인 연구를 진행한 결과, 우리는 각 사용자들로 하여금 세 가지 동기로 구별할 수 있었다: 내적동기, 외적동기, 복합적 동기이다. 더 나아가 사용자들의 동기가 시간에 따라 순수한 내적동기와 외적동기에서 복합적 동기로 변화함을 관찰할 수 있었다. 이러한 변화는 사용자들의 암호화폐 생태계를 보는 경향에 따라 나타나는데, 블록 체인으로 대변되는 기술적인 측면과 높은 변동성으로 대표되는 투자적 측면 모두를 고려할 때 나타남을 알 수 있었다. 본 논문을 통해 우리는 암호화폐 사용자들의 동기변화를 관찰할 수 있었고 추후 연구에 활용될 수 있는 프레임워크를 제시할 수 있었다.
