This study investigated the effect of forgiveness on the forgiven person (transgressor)’s creativity. Our ‘being forgiven as restoration in creativity hypotheses’ were supported by two experimental studies. The findings showed that participants in the unforgiven condition showed less creativity than those in the forgiven and the baseline condition. Also, the participants who committed transgression but are forgiven showed not significantly different performance in creativity task with those in the baseline condition. Based on the dual-pathway to creativity model, our research showed that the effect of being (un)forgiven on creativity was mediated by cognitive persistence. Our research also ruled out possible mediators; cognitive flexibility, positive emotion, and negative emotion. Theoretical contributions and practical implications are discussed.
본 연구는 용서가 용서받은 사람의 창의성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 두 차례의 미국인을 대상으로 한 실험연구를 통해 ‘용서받음으로 인한 창의성 회복’가설을 검증하였다. 실험 결과에 의하면, 용서받은 사람들과 기준 상태에 속한(대인 간 갈등에 무관한) 사람들은 용서받지 못한 사람들보다 높은 창의성을 보였으며, 용서받은 사람들과 기준 상태의 사람들 사이에서의 창의성에서는 유의한 차이가 발견되지 않았다. 본 연구는 창의성의 이중경로 모델을 기반으로 하여, 용서받음과 창의성 사이에 인지적 노력에 의한 매개효과가 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 대안 매개 가설 검정을 통해 인지적 유연성, 긍정적 감정, 부정적 감정에 의한 매개효과의 가능성을 배제하였다.
