In the near future, it is expected that robots will carry out dangerous work instead of human. Among dangerous works, emergency countermeasure for nuclear plant problem is one of the most important issue. Nuclear plants have radioactive materials that make damage to human in short term and long term. Also there are dangerousness such as rupture of unstable structure, low visibility due to steam and high temperature. Therefore, to accomplish successful nuclear plant emergency countermeasure, appropriate robot should be deployed instead of humans. If the robot operates properly, humans lives will be saved and prevent damage of property. In this context, one of the main task of the robot is turning problematic valve. Closing or opening problematic valve could stabilize whole nuclear plants in emergency situation. However, In case of emergency situation, turning valve could require high torques because of high pressure inside the pipe or misalignment of valve turning axis. In this thesis, manipulation motion of turning valves for nuclear plant is discussed. For increase valve turning torque, motion planning using both arm with upper body motion is proposed. Robot hardware and target valve is analyzed and based on this, both arm and upper body motion is formulated. Afterward, simulation shows maximum valve turning torque in terms of static friction. In conclusion, it is found that using both arm and upper body motion is outperforms the both arm and fixed body motion.
