The shape design of a load-carrying hook and a ring under diametral compression is formulated to minimize the maximum stress for a given area restriction. The sensitivity analysis is made using the formula obtained based on boundary integral equation and boundary element method is used for numerical discretization of the two dimensional problems. A sequential linear programming approach is adopted for optimization.
The final shapes are in agreement with the forms in the literature, where the areas are minimzed under stress constraints.
