In this thesis, a English Morphological Analysis System that can reduce a dictionary size and help syntactic analysis is designed and implemented. in natural language processing system, the size of a dictionary is very large. Thus, a method that can reduce the size is needed. And because of ambiguities of the words in the sentence, the process reducing the task of the syntactic analysis is needed as much as possible in the morphological analysis phase.
The system is composed of two phases. The first phase divides a word into a stem and any affixes using affix tables . By processing any variant form of the stem using the tables, the dictionary can contain only the base forms of any words. So the size of the dictionary can be reduced. The second phase combines, adds and disambiguates the information of the words using morphological rules. Also using the tables and the rules, the system guesses the parts of the speech of the words that are not in the dictionary.
This system is made for MATES-EK(MAcine Translation Environment SystemEnglish to Korean). The input of this system is any English text and the output is the sentences attached the dictionary information and it is used as the input of syntactic analysis phase.
