Recent advances in heterogeneous catalysis have generated to understand pressure gap and materials gap between model catalyst systems and industrial catalyst. Metal nanoparticles supported on metal oxide as practical catalysts, together with development of in situ surface-sensitive characterization tools such as in situ Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, has opened new opportunities to bridge these gaps and better understand the mechanism of catalytic reactions and the catalytic sites. CO oxidation reaction is one of the most important heterogeneous catalysis and deeply related with industrial field to control carbon monoxide from automobile exhaust. Surface oxide on the metal has been used one of identifying molecular factors that plays an important role to determine the catalytic activity. The exploring of the existence of the surface oxide layer is important to understand the catalytic activity and design the high-performance catalysts. Here, we show the first evidence of surface oxide that in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy can be used to examine hybrid nanocatalysts that Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are anchored on met-al oxide for CO oxidation. The peak position of the v(C≡O) mode is used as an indicator of the effective oxidation number for Pt NPs. These results are able to elucidate that the role of surface oxide on Pt nanoparticles affect the catalytic activity during CO oxidation reaction. In addition, according to different pretreatments (oxidative and reductive) of hybrid catalysts, they have a significant meaning on the oxidation state and thus the CO oxidation performance. We suppose that the oxidation state of metal is playing a predominant role in the chemical reactivity.
