In this thesis, a graphics accelerator for the generation of high quality fonts used in the electrical publishing system was designed and implemented. The graphics accelerator consists of TMS34010(Graphics System Processor), TMS320C25 (Digital Signal Processor) and shared memory for communication between the two processors.
In this graphics accelerator, TMS34010 plays a role of host processors, which has responsibility for the whole management of the accelerator. TMS320C25 was used for the calculation of such mathematical operation as curve calculation, transformation and scaling because doing all the calculation within only TMS34010 is so much overhead that the speed is far less than the desired. For efficient communication between the two processors, a shared memory scheme is proposed, which consists of two memory blocks with the same address.
The implemented graphics accelerator operates on the IBM-PC AT and its compatible PC. The operation speed of the developed S/W routines(line, circle, box_fill etc.) running on this graphics accelerator is fast enough to use this graphics accelerator in the electronic publishing system.
