A new electronic transformer using DC-DC converter composed of bi-directional switches is proposed in this paper. No output regulation is required and bi-directional power flow is permitted. Its switching operation occurs at zero-current points which results in nearly zero device switching loss, reliable high frequency operation and low EMI. Hence its size and weight can be reduced due to the high frequency operation.
The simplified modeling of the electronic transformer is suggested and verified through analysis and simulations. Experimental results for 500W load show that isolation transformer size is drastically reduced with low harmonic distortion in comparison with conventional electric transformer.
