This paper describes the dynamic thermal behaviors of weldment in GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) process. Because it is necessary to know accurately the process characteristics for control, it is very important to analyze the thermal response of GMAW at transient region.
Transient 3-D heat conduction problem incorperated with metal transfer of GMAW Is solved using SUR (succesive underrelaxation ) of FDM and its results are compared with Rosenthal's analytical solution and 2-D numerical solution
The comparison between experiment and theory shows that metal transfer phenomenon, which is modelled with gaussian distribution of arc, affect the distribution and magnitude of temperature. And the transient thermal behavior which is affected from thermal history shows that the growth rate of weld pool is faster than that of heat affected zone.
