In quartz shaping processes, grinding process is excellent in material removal rate, but poor in surface roughness compare with lapping process. Therefore, in order to improve the ground surface roughness, it is necessary to know the surface roughness characteristics in the quartz grinding.
In this study, first, chip removal mechanism in the quartz grinding which is the cause of surface roughness is studied by scratch test and inspecting the ground surfaces.
On the basis of this chip removal mechanism, the variation of the grinding mechanism with the grinding variables is studied by analyzing specific grinding energy.
Next, the surface roughness variation with the grinding variables, that is, surface roughness characteristics is presented by experiment, and analyzed on the basis of the grinding mechanism.
This study shows that the chips are created by brittle fracture ahead of the motion of the wheel-grains. Also, the surface roughness is greatly varied with wheel speed, table speed, grain size and the sorts of bonding material.
