As robotics and other cutting edge technologies increase their presence in our homes in an expanding variety of product typologies, and, as more countries align with this trend, the number of contexts in which people adapt to these new technologies, along with the concept of people and products themselves, increase significantly in their diversity. This scenario thus calls for a better understanding of the contexuality in which adaptation takes place in order to unveil how differences in adaptation patterns occur. For this purpose, two countries with different technological conditions as Peru and South Korea were chosen, broadening the scope and building over existing studies done in Europe and USA. Thereby, four Peruvian and four Korean families were given a robot vacuum cleaner each and their adaptation processes were followed in detail over an extension of 6 months. During this time, periodical visits including Likert scales, semi-structured interviews and generative tools were employed along with periodical video recordings and social media tools. After a combination of ethnographic interpretation, behavioral analysis and grounded theory procedures, three important elements influencing the adaptation patterns were identified, namely the Contextual Novelty of the product, the Family Standards over functional, aesthetic, social matters, and the Family Profile, this last one particularly on regards to the family composition, and the member’s background knowledge, expectations and motivations. From the findings, the Adaptation Profiles Framework (APF) was developed, which elaborates on the existing relationship between adaptation patterns and their influencing elements. Finally, design implications were drawn from this framework in the form of action plans and considerations towards the improvement of the adaptation processes focusing on the importance of their contextuality.
로봇 공학과 최신 기술이 적용된 제품군이 점차 그 영역을 넓혀나가면서, 이제는 일상 가정 환경에서도 로봇 기술이 들어간 제품을 어렵지 않게 찾아 볼 수 있게 되었다. 이러한 기술 확산은 어느 한 나라에서만 보이는 현상이 아닌 많은 나라에서 관찰할 수 있는 보편적인 현상으로 자리 잡고 있다. 그에 따라 로봇 공학 및 최신 기술이 적용된 제품에 대해 사용자가 적응하는 맥락 또한 매우 다양하게 증가하고 있다. 이러한 상황은 서로 다른 사용자가 속한 적응 환경의 공간적 특성이 새로운 기술을 적응하는 패턴에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 맥락적인 관점에서 이해할 수 있는 좋은 기회를 제공해 준다. 본 연구는 미국과 유럽을 중심으로 이루어진 기존의 연구 스펙트럼을 넓힐 수 있으면서, 각기 다른 기술적 환경을 지닌 한국과 페루, 두 나라를 선정하여 실험을 진행하였다. 실험은 한국인 가정 네 곳과 페루인 가정 네 곳을 선정하여 로봇 청소기를 나눠주고 6개월 동안 사용하는 방식으로 이루어졌다. 실험 기간 동안 주기적으로 대상 가족을 방문하여 리커트 스케일과 약식 인터뷰를 수행하였으며, 정기적인 동영상 녹화와 소셜 미디어 툴을 이용한 생성적 도구 방법도 실시하였다. 민족지적 해석, 행동 분석, 근거 이론을 토대로 실험 내용을 분석한 결과, 사용자 적응 패턴에 영향을 미치는 세 가지 중요 영향 요소를 도출하였다. 첫번째 요소는 제품의 맥락적 신규성, 두번째 요소는 가족이 생각하는 기능적, 미학적, 사회적 기준들, 마지막 요소는, 가족 구성원의 배경지식, 기대, 동기를 포함하는 가족의 프로파일이다. 이러한 이해를 바탕으로, 적응 패턴과 영향 요소들 간의 관계를 설명하는 적응 프로파일 프레임워크 (Adaptation Profiles Framework)를 도출하였다. 마지막으로, 맥락적 요소에 따른 사용자의 적응 프로세스를 개선할 수 있는 액션 플랜과 고려 사항이 담겨있는 디자인 적용 방안을 프레임워크로부터 제시하였다.
