The notion of glocalization has become widely spread in various fields, and accordingly, it is increasingly more important to take account of indigenous cultural characteristics in each field. An aspect of achieving glocalization, globalization with local consideration, is to consider the difference of color usages and environmental atmosphere between distinct cultures. This study aims to find cultural and locational differences with the color usages under the condition of equivalent Disney themes but different cultural circumstances―eastern (Tokyo Disneyland) and western (Disneyland Paris), and identify whether if there is a relationship between the used colors and the local urban environment. This study suggests an approach to investigate the color differences between eastern and western cultures with the case analysis of building facade colors in Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland. To do this, digital image based k-means clustering algorithm, CIELAB color space and Natural Color System (NCS) was used to explore color characteristics. Accordingly, Tokyo and Paris urban color usage characteristics were analyzed to investigate cultural connections. This study found out that there is a difference with the color usages between eastern and western located theme parks and in addition, there is a connection between the colors used in local theme parks and the local surrounding environment in terms of color hue and nuance. Disneyland Paris used relatively calm and deep colors while Tokyo Disneyland used relatively active and bright colors for their attractions. In the same vein, environmental colors of the urbanscape also appeared similar features and color usage characteristics. Whether it is intended or not, both of the theme parks considerably showed correspondence with the overall urban environmental color usages. The major motivation of this paper was to reflect the atmosphere and the mood of the space that can be easily felt but not readily expressible into a cultural color palette. By finding the color differences, this study suggest a strategy for designers to consider local colors from environmental clues when designing themed environments to adapt into their themed environment design.
다국적 기업의 현지 토착화 혹은 세계화와 현지화를 동시에 이루어 시너지 효과를 극대화 하는 행위인 글로컬라이제이션이 다양한 분야에 확산되면서, 각 지역의 문화적 특성을 고려해야 하는 필요성은 높아지고 있다. 이러한 시점에서 지역 환경을 고려한 전략적인 색채 사용은 성공적인 글로컬라이제이션 과정에서 효과적인 마케팅 수단이 되기도 한다. 본 연구에서는 글로벌 테마파크인 디즈니랜드 사례분석을 통해 디즈니랜드 파리와 도쿄 디즈니랜드의 동일한 테마 어트랙션 건축물의 색채 사용 차이 특성을 규명하고, 부가적으로 테마파크가 위치한 지역 환경 색채와의 연결 고리를 탐색해보고자 한다. 이를 위해 디지털 이미지를 기반으로 건축물 입면 색채 추출, 사람의 색채 인지를 기반으로 구축된 색 공간으로의 변환, k-means 클러스터링 알고리즘을 통한 건축물 입면 대표 색채의 생성이 이루어졌으며 CIELAB 색 공간과 자연색체계(NCS) 색 공간을 이용하여 각 테마파크의 색채 사용 현황 분석 및 특징을 도출하였다. 또한 각 지역의 도시 환경의 색채 추출을 통해 지역 문화적 색채 차이 특성을 분석하였고, 테마파크의 색채 사용 특성과의 연결성을 탐구해보고자 하였다. 결과적으로 동양권에 위치한 테마파크와 서양권에 위치한 테마파크 간의 색채 사용 차이를 규명하였으며, 주변 지역 환경 역시 이러한 색채 차이 특성과 상당 부분 닮아 있음을 확인하였다. 디즈니랜드 파리의 경우 비교적 차분하고 깊은 색채 사용을 통해 전반적인 테마파크 분위기를 형성하였으며, 도쿄 디즈니랜드의 경우 비교적 활동적이고 밝은 색채사용을 통해 전반적인 테마파크 분위기를 형성하였음을 정량적으로 도출하였다. 파리의 도시 환경 색채 역시 NCS 공간에서의 제한적인 뉘앙스 영역의 색채 사용 분포를 보였으며, 이는 보다 정돈되고 차분한 도시이미지를 형성함을 확인하였다. 도쿄의 경우 다양한 뉘앙스 영역의 색채 사용 분포를 보였으며 이는 보다 생기 있고 화려한 도시이미지를 형성함을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 통해 각 지역의 테마파크의 색채 사용이 해당 지역의 문화 환경적인 색채 사용과 상당부분 닮아 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구의 궁극적인 목적은 사람에게 큰 영향을 주지만 표현하기 모호한 어려움이 있던 공간 색채 분위기의 차이를 정량적으로 통해 도출해 보고자 하였다. 이러한 차이의 규명을 통해 후에 테마파크 디자이너들이 지역 및 문화 색을 반영할 수 있는 디자인 접근법을 제안하며, 지속적으로 참고 가능한 문화 및 지역색 탐구 방안을 제안하고자 한다.
