This research starts with a simple curiosity about spatial patterns of users in home screens. Home screens that are accessible via displays of smartphones are a kind of mediated spaces and those are experienced most frequently by users nowadays. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the spatial pattern of how the smartphone users conceptualize and categorize the home screens, as a mediated space. Due to its mobility, a smartphone has a relatively small sized screen and the number of icons arrangeable is limited. Users contemplate how they will arrange their home screens by making folders and etc., for efficient access to the applications. In other words, home screens reflect users’ mental models and therefore seem to be a meaningful research subject. As a sort of mediated spaces, home screens are studied through proxemics research methodologies. The proxemics methods, which were used by Hall to find out people’s spatial patterns in real spaces, were also applied in this research in order to investigate those in the home screens. Prior to the application of the methodologies, the differences between a real space and a mediated space are concerned and reflected into reconstruction of the methodology framework.
스마트폰 사용자들은 자신의 홈 화면을 각기 다른 모습으로 개인화한다. 이러한 홈 화면의 개성에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 본 연구는 사용자들의 홈 화면에 대한 ‘공간적 관념’의 차이를 제안한다. 일종의 매개 공 간인 스마트폰의 홈 화면에서의 공간적 행위를 탐구하기 위하여, 실공간에서의 공간적 행위를 관찰하였던 에드워드 홀의 프락시믹스 연구를 활용하였다. 인류학자 홀은 여러 가지 방법론을 통하여 사람들을 관찰 및 분석한 결과 사람들은 무의식중에 각자 공간적 관념을 형성하고 있었으며, 그러한 관념이 특정 공간을 사용 시의 행동에 영향을 준다는 점을 도출하였다. 홀이 프락스믹스 연구에 사용하였던 방법론들을 스마트폰 홈 화면의 특성에 따라 고찰하여 본 논문만의 연구 프레임워크를 구상하였다. 홀이 밝힌 인간의 공간 사용법 중 HCI 분야에서도 숱하게 활용되는 대표적인 세 가지는 조직화 모델, 개인적 공간, 그리고 공간의 사회성이었 는데, 따라서 본 연구는 홀의 세 가지 이론이 홈 화면이라는 공간 내에서 어떻게 발현되고 있는지를 중점으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 그와는 별개로 추가로 관찰되는 공간적 행동의 발견에 대한 가능성 또한 열어놓았다. 그 결과 본 연구는 홈 화면에서의 프락시믹스 성립 가능성을 비롯하여 사용자들의 홈 화면에 대한 공간적 행위들을 개괄적으로 관찰할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통하여 도출된 결과들은 홈 화면에서의 공간적 행동과 프락시믹스적 행동의 기초 연구로써 활용될 수 있겠다.
