Despite much research on the activities and processes of knowledge creation in universities, there has been relatively scant attention to who really creates knowledge in the academic research performed in universities. This study looks into the perceptions and roles of graduate students and professors in university laboratories to understand the dynamics of knowledge creation in the areas of science and technology, employing a two-phase multi-method. The first phase takes a qualitative approach to develop a theoretical framework for the mechanisms of knowledge creation in the university laboratory. Based on this framework, in the second phase, an empirical analysis is conducted using survey data obtained from professors and their graduate students at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). This empirical analysis uses a structural equation model and a multilevel regression model. This study highlights the importance of graduate students as the main agents who create new knowledge at the bottom of the hierarchical structure of a university laboratory and elucidates the interaction between graduate students and professors, which could contribute to improvement of university research performance.
대학은 국가혁신시스템 내 대표적인 혁신 주체임에도 불구하고 지식을 실제로 창출하는 대학 구성원들에 대한 연구는 상대적으로 미미했다. 본 논문은 양적, 질적 방법론을 활용하여 대학 실험실의 지식창출 과정에서 대학원생과 교수의 역할 및 인식을 연구하였다. 첫째, 각종 실험과 연구를 직접 수행하는 등 실험실 지식 생산의 중요한 역할을 맡고 있는 대학원생들을 인터뷰하여 실험실에서의 지식창출 요인을 도출하였다. 이를 토대로 지식 및 창의성 이론을 기반으로 한 분석틀을 구성하였다. 둘째, 한국의 대표적인 과학기술중심대학인 KAIST의 대학원생과 교수를 상대로 설문 조사를 통해 이론적 분석틀을 검증하는 실증 연구를 수행하였다. 설문 조사의 통계적 분석을 위해 인과적 요인간의 관계성과 대학원생 및 교수 간의 상호 영향을 고려하여 구조방정식과 다층적 회귀분석을 활용하였다.
