Carbon-based materials, especially N-doped carbon, have been highlighted as non-precious metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) due to their high methanol?CO tolerance and good durability compared to commercially available noble metal catalysts. In alkaline media, various carbon-based catalysts have been developed and they show comparable ORR activities to that of Pt. However, despite their rapid advance, carbon-based catalysts have exhibited much lower ORR activities than that of Pt in acidic media. Therefore, an enhancement of the ORR activity of the carbon-based catalysts is one of the most important topics in the research on polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which are operated in the acidic environment. Among the various carbon materials, graphene has enabled significant advances in energy conversion and storage technologies due to its unique properties derived from the two-dimensional layered structure of $sp^2$ -hybridized carbon. In this study, various methods including doping of heteroatoms, hybridizing graphene with other carbon materials, and size controlling were applied to enhance the ORR performance of graphene-based catalysts. Additionally, synthesized graphene-based catalysts were applied into high-temperature PEMFC for the first time.
