In this thesis, we demonstrate that the filter processor which is composed of an on-the-fly filter and a joinability filter provides dramatic improvement in the performance of relational operations. We evaluate the performance improvement by the analytical method using some cost functions and prove it by the experimental results. For the proof, we implement an experimental prototype of single processor data-base machine using the filter processor. We design and implement the filter processor with TTL devices and connect it to a microcomputer used for a query processor. On this hardware configuration, we implement a tiny database management system with functions of processing relational operators, utility commands, and simple access method.
