The configuration problem in solids - determination of atomic configurations in the solids - is one of the simplest yet computationally still demanding problems in materials prediction. While approximate methods have been developed for molecular systems, such methods are often considered inappropriate for solids due to their nature. In this thesis, two approximate methods for solids, namely weighted many-body expansion (MBE) and artificial neural network (ANN) based approach, are proposed and tested. Both approaches are shown to be computationally efficient without significant loss in accuracy. Finally, analytic gradients of doubly hybrid functionals with OS-PT2 ansatz are derived, which can lead to highly accurate geometries, which is one of the ultimate goals of the materials prediction.
