Detection of aqueous contaminations is very important as these toxic materials negatively affect human health and environment. Especially mercury ions and its compounds, which were ranked $3^{rd}$ according to the detailed substance priority list (SPL) in 2011, are highly toxic to human health and environment. Therefore, it is important to develop methods for detecting mercury ions in water. There have been many techniques for detec-ting mercury ions such as chromatographic, spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. However these techniques have many limitations such as costly instrumentation, complex preparation of sample, possibility of contamination and lack of portability et al. So new approach is necessary to overcome the limitations of previous techniques.
Here we suggest new method consists of graphene and gold in microchannel for detecting $Hg^{2+}$ ions in water. It is well known that when nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes and graphene, are being immersed in flowing fluids, then flow-induced voltages were generated. Especially, flow-induced voltages are varied accord-ing to the feature of flowing fluids such as polarity, viscosity and ionic strength et al. By comparison of these electric signals, we probably distinguish $Hg^{2+}$ ions dissolved in water.
Prior to developing mercury sensor, we analyzed the mechanisms related to flow-induced voltage generation. Because the origin of the flow-induced voltage is still ambiguous. So we conducted experiment varying various experimental factors including materials (semiconducting SWCNT, metallic SWCNT, graphene), liquids (ionic liquid: KCl and $CH_3COOH$, polar liquid: $H_2O$, $C_5H_5N$ and $C_6H_{12}$) and structure of the device (electrodes aligned parallel to flow, electrodes aligned perpendicular to flow). Based on these experiment results, we found that there are different mechanisms for different configurations: parallel type - charge redistribution and phonon dragging, perpendicular type - enhanced out-of-plane phonon mode.
And we conducted feasibility experiments for its applications. We mad the network type device with semi-conducting single-walled carbon nanotubes for flow sensor. Flow-induced voltage measured in a microfluidic chip fabricated with s-SWCNT film embedded between electrodes. Finally we could detect the velocity of 0.01 mm/s and we found that it can be used as a sensor with nano materials in microchannel.
Finally we suggest mercury sensor which is consists of graphene and gold in microchannel for the first time. We demonstrated that this mercury sensor could produce unique electrical signals, result in detecting $Hg^{2+}$ ions dissolved in water. This is due to the strong coupling of $Hg^{2+}$ ions and gold which cause to disturb movements of electrons in graphene. This is what we called ‘localization of free charge carriers’. Based on experiment results, we found that it could detect the presence of $Hg^{2+}$ ions up to $10^{-9}$ M with a fast response time. But it needs addi-tional experiments for verifying the working principle and enhancing sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor.
