In this thesis, the design and implementation of an integrated voice/data network interface unit(NIU) for a token ring local area network (LAN) is described, and the performance modelling and analysis of a token ring LAN in a VDI environment are presented.
First, examining the hardware structure, it is shown that VDI can be inplemented without a large overhead by modifying the IOM board of a data-only LAN. Also, a voice protocol to service telephone communication is proposed, which is operating independently with the packet assembler/disassembler (PAD) for data service.
For performance analysis, the conditional cycle time approximation approach is used. The analytical results indicate that packetized voice service can be provided on a token ring LAN without adversely affecting the performance of data traffic. This is accomplished by introducing a relatively moderate priority structure: stations are limited to a single packet transmission per medium access, and voice packets are given access priority over data packets at the same station.
결과적으로 voice packet과 data packet의 mean delay time 은 conditional cycle time들의 first와 second moment의 함수로 주어짐을 알 수 있었다.
