Recent studies document that financial derivatives could be used as a way of timing or avoiding corporate taxes(Donohoe, 2015; Zeng, 2014). They find that a firm's realized losses or unrealized gains from using derivatives are negatively associated with its effective tax rate, suggesting the corporate use of derivatives to time or avoid corporate taxes. This study aims at extending the previous literature to examine the effects of using financial derivatives on tax avoidance in Korean financial markets. Using data from Korean financial companies for the period of 2009-2014, we find that a firm’s realized losses or unrealized gains from using derivatives are positively associated with its effective tax rate, suggesting no evidence that financial companies in Korea are using derivatives as a way of timing or avoiding corporate taxes.
최근의 연구는 파생상품 사용이 시기 선택(timing) 또는 기업 세금을 회피하는 방법으로 사용될 수 있음을 나타내고 있다(Donohoe, 2015; Zeng, 2014). Zeng(2014)은 파생상품을 이용하는 기업의 순 실현손실 이나 순 미실현이익은 조세회피와 음(-)의 관계가 있음을 발견했고 이는 파생상품을 사용하는 기업이 시기 선택(time)이나 기업의 세금을 피하기 위한 것이라고 제시하고 있다. 본 연구는 국내 금융 시장에서 파생상품 사용의 조세 회피에 대한 효과를 연구하는 이전 연구들에 대한 연장을 목적으로 한다. 2009년에서 2014년 사이의 기간에 국내 금융 회사의 데이터를 사용하면서, 본 논문은 파생상품을 이용하는 기업의 순 실현손실 이나 순 미실현이익은 조세회피와 양(+)의 관계가 있음을 발견했고 이는 한국 금융회사는 시기 선택(timing)의 방법이나 기업의 세금을 피하는 방법으로 파생상품을 사용하지 않는다는 증거를 제시하고 있다.
