In this paper, I analyzed how the volatility of a firm’s R&D expenditure affects the growth rate of a firm. There is a hypothesis that views a volatility of R&D expenditure as an index showing ‘proactive R&D management’ which enables a firm to reach a high growth rate. On the other hand, there exist some hypotheses that persistency of investment in R&D raises efficiency, promises profitability and cultivates absorptive capacity. I conclude these seemingly contradictory predictions related to the volatility of R&D expenditure can be explained by different time points of their effectiveness.
By an empirical study of manufacturing firms in Korea, this study shows that high volatility of R&D expenditure does positively affect growth rates of firms in short-run, but in the long-run, damage to the efficiency starts to overwhelm the benefits of proactive R&D management, and hinder the firm growth in the end.
본 논문에서는 기업의 연구개발투자 변동성이 기업 성장에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 분석하였다. 기업의 연구개발투자 변동성을 주도적 연구개발관리 정도로 이해하여, 기업의 성장에 도움이 된다고 주장하는 가설이 있다. 반면 기업의 연구개발투자 지속성이 효율성을 제고하고 이익률을 높이며 흡수 능력을 길러준다는 가설이 있으며 이를 통해 기업 성장에 도움이 될 것이라고 해석할 수 있는 여지가 있다. 본 연구에서는 이렇게 상반되는 주장이 변동성 혹은 지속성이 기업 성장에 영향을 미치는 시점에 따라 각각 설명될 수 있다고 결론지었다.
한국 제조산업 기업들을 대상으로 한 실증분석을 통해, 본 연구는 기업의 연구개발투자 변동성이 단기 기업 성장에는 도움을 주지만, 오히려 장기적으로는 효율성을 저해하여 주도적 연구개발관리라는 장점을 상쇄하며 장기 기업 성장은 방해한다는 것을 밝혔다.
