In this paper, I studied why some firms are vertically integrated. Many firms are vertically integrated and they get more profit than are not vertically integrated. So in duopoly market which is vertically differentiated, I analyzed which strategy is good for firm’s profits and which is not. Also I considered that downstream market is horizontally differentiated and two firms determine whether they supply their product exclusively or not. Therefore, I solved two stage problem and find sub-game perfect equilibrium of the game.
For high quality firm, vertical integration is dominant strategy not related to competitive firm’s choice. But for low quality firm, vertical integration or not is depends on competitive firm’s choice. So if high quality firm is vertically integrated, low quality firm is also vertically integrated, and so on. Then I found that in duopoly market which is vertically differentiated, equilibrium is that both firms are vertically integrated but each firm’s best strategy is different each other
제품은 크게 제조 유통 단계로 나누어 생산, 판매되며 이는 독립적인 여러 기업들을 통해서 이루어 지기도 하고 하나의 통합된 기업을 통해서 이루어 지기도 한다. 이 때 이러한 제조, 유통등의 과정을 통합하는 절차를 흔히 수직결합(Vertical Integration)이라고 한다. 흔히 수직결합은 이중마진을 없애 효율성을 달성한다는 장점이 있지만 경쟁을 제한하고 상위기업이 하위시장에 시장지배력을 행사할 가능성이 있다는 단점 또한 존재한다.
논문에서는 복점시장에서 두 기업의 수직결합여부를 결정하는 게임을 분석한다. 상위기업은 품질이 수직적으로 차별화 되어있고, 하위기업은 수평적으로 차별화 되어 있는 시장에서 두 기업은 각각 수직결합여부와 제품의 배타적 공급여부를 순차적으로 결정한다. 본 논문의 결과에 따르면 제품의 품질이 높은 기업은 항상 수직결합을 하는 것이 최선의 전략이며 제품의 품질이 낮은 기업은 품질이 높은 기업의 선택과 동일하게 수직결합여부를 결정한다는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 다른 품질의 제품을 생산하는 두 기업이 경쟁할 때 두 기업의 수직결합여부를 결정하는 최적선택은 서로 상이하다는 것을 알 수 있다.
