Valve motion is very important in internal combustion engine because the motion affects directly and significantly not only on engine efficiency but also on the generally noise. Since the valve train operates with varying RPM and it consists of spring and lumped masses, the dynamic performance should be checked to analyze the valve system.
In this paper, a diesel engine valve train was studied to improve its performances. A five degree of freedom model was set up and checked to prove the adequateness. Several parameters such as spring stiffness, mass, damping coefficients ... etc are directly measured and remains were calculated as comparing the model analysis outputs with experimental results.
With the experimentally proved five degree of freedom model, model simulation was done to improve the valve train performances by adopting sensitivity analysis.
