In recent years, there has been published a lot of studies that adopt ‘tag’ in order to reduce information overload. The ‘folder system’, which is major file organizing tool in computer system, is fixed to a tree-like structure, so an item entry in that system couldn’t belong to more than one category at the same time. However, tag can be rearranged in a variety of tree-like structure, so a single item entry can belong to more than one category. This gives advantage of flexibility in file-organizing system, but it also has disadvantages of increasing complexity. So I had made an assumption that, “Only if someone could make a well-structured guideline on tagging system, then ‘tag’ would be more widely adopted, and would give more comfort to users of computer system, especially in the domain of PIM(Personal Information System). Therefore, this study would compare the ‘traditional’ folder-type classification system to ‘relatively new & flexible’ tag-type classification system. I propose a kind of tag guidelines which utilizes ‘context, subject, and usage’, and verify this by experiments.
근래 들어 정보 과부하를 줄이기 위해 ‘태그’라는 시스템을 이용하는 방안에 대해 논하는 연구들이 많이 나오고 있다. 현재까지의 컴퓨터 시스템에선 주로 ‘폴더’ 시스템을 이용해 파일을 관리하곤 하는데, 폴더는 나무 모양과 비슷한 구조를 하고 있고, 각각의 아이템은 한 번에 하나의 분류에만 속해있을 수 있다. 반면에 태그는 때에 따라 여러 형태의 가변적인 나무 구조를 취할 수 있고, 하나의 아이템에 동시에 두 개 이상의 분류에 속할 수 있다는 차이가 있다. 이는 파일 관리 측면에서 유연성을 주지만, 분류의 복잡성을 증가시킨다는 단점도 있다.
이 연구에서는, “태그 시스템에서 잘 구조화된 가이드라인을 사용자에게 제시한다면, 태그라는 시스템이 좀 더 널리 퍼져나갈 수 있을 것이고, 특히 PIM(Personal Information System, 개인용 정보 관리 시스템) 분야에서 사용자에게 좀 더 좋은 환경을 제공할 수 있을 것이다”라고 가정했다. 이를 검증하기 위해 ‘전통적인’ 폴더 타입의 분류법과, ‘상대적으로 새롭고 유연한’ 태그 타입의 분류 체계를 비교해보고자 한다. 태그의 활용법에 있어서는 ‘맥락, 주제, 용도’라는 다면적인 측면을 제시하고, 실험을 통해 이러한 접근이 실제로 유용한지 검증했다.
