The Acoustic Emission (AE) signal was monitored during cutting process in order to detect the progress of too wear indirectly.
From the measured data, it is observed that the averaged level of the AE signal increases in proportion to the flank wear land until it also increases to a certain critical value, and then becomes saturated.
Therefore, it is expected that the monitoring of AE signals may be used to inprocess sensing of tool wears and to guess the tool changing time.
Besides the AE signals, a few acceleration signals measured in frequency domain using FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analyzer to check the applicability in practice.
