Traffic congestion has been a crucial problem in various cities, because of the increasing number of cars while the number of roads is limited. According to this phenomenon, driver stress has arisen as an important issue. Existing studies have been focusing on measuring driver stress level and reducing the stress level with several ideas. Compared to the previous research, this study has a unique goal, which is investigating fundamental causes of driver stress related to the drivers’ communication. Furthermore, it is aiming to suggest a solution related to the drivers’ communication and to prove the effects of the solution. The field study and the online survey were conducted to investigate current problems of drivers. Result of the research show the limitations of current car interface, which merely focuses on communication between drivers with no capability to deliver driver’s emotions. The prototype of new car interface, which enables emotion expressions of driver, was made in order to make up the weak points of current car interface. Using the prototype, the experiment was conducted with 10 drivers in real road environment. During the experiment, participants used the prototype to express their emotions and also watched the expression in follower’s point of view. This study attempts to find the values of the prototype from the participants’ experiences. Compared to normal driving environment, there was significant decrease in average heart rate of the drivers when they use the prototype, and drivers experienced pleasant driving and felt sympathy each other when they express emotions through the prototype. From this result, it is validated that the emotion expressing interface can reduce driver’s stress. Lastly, the further implications of emotion expressing car interface were suggested from the interview and idea workshop with drivers who used the advanced version of prototype.
자동차의 수는 계속하여 늘어나지만 도로는 그에 비해 한정적이기 때문에, 교통 체증은 많은 도시에서 큰 문제가 되어 왔다. 이러한 현상에 맞춰, 운전자 스트레스는 중요한 이슈로 떠오르고 있다. 현존하는 연구들은 운전자 스트레스의 정도를 측정하거나 몇 가지 아이디어로 스트레스 정도를 줄이는 것에 집중하고 있었다. 기존의 연구에 비교하여 본 연구는 운전자 간의 소통과 관련하여 운전자 스트레스의 근본적인 원인을 밝히는 것을 고유의 목적으로 가진다. 그에 더해, 운전자 간의 소통에 관련하여 해결 방안을 제시하고 이를 검증하는 것을 목표로 한다. 현장 조사와 온라인 설문 조사는 운전자들의 현재 문제점을 조사하기 위해 진행되었다. 조사의 결과는 기존의 자동차 인터페이스가 운전자의 감정을 전달하지 못한다는 한계점을 보여주었다. 이러한 기존의 자동차 인터페이스를 보완하기 위해 운전자의 감정을 쉽게 표현해주는 새로운 형태의 인터페이스를 프로토타입으로 제작했다. 프로토타입을 사용하여 10명의 운전자와 실제 도로 환경에서 실험을 진행할 수 있었다. 실험에서 참가자들은 프로토타입을 사용하는 입장과 프로토타입을 사용하는 것을 관찰하는 입장 모두를 경험할 수 있었으며, 이를 통해 감정 표현 자동차 인터페이스의 가치를 발견하고자 했다. 실험의 결과로, 프로토타입을 사용하며 운전을 했을 때, 운전자의 평균 심박수가 평상시 운전에 비해 줄어들었으며, 운전자들은 즐거운 경험을 하고 서로의 상황에 대해 공감을 더욱 할 수 있었음을 발견했다. 이러한 결과를 통해, 감정 표현 자동차 인터페이스가 운전자의 스트레스를 줄여준다는 것을 입증할 수 있었다. 추가적으로, 발전된 형태의 프로토타입을 새롭게 제작하여 이를 운전자들이 사용하고 인터뷰와 아이디어 워크샵을 진행하여 추후 발전 가능성을 알아볼 수 있었다.
