The LCD industry in Korea has been analyzed focusing on the two major companies, Samsung Display Ltd. and LG Display Ltd., that produce the end product. However, the roles of the suppliers of materials, components, and equipment are also important in the making of the complete product. Such roles are especially important in the LCD industry because the production process exists in a complicated connection with each supplier. In this study, according to the LCD industry value chain, we analyze the characteristics of the core players, which include the suppliers, and the distribution of national R&D projects in the LCD industry. Then, using product architecture, the features of the three detailed sectors of the LCD industry are analyzed, including the fabrication process, the module process, and LCD equipment. Then, governmental support for the LCD industry is analyzed.
This study determined that the LCD industry players are distributed according to the features of the architecture into three parts. On the other hand, regarding national R&D projects, the architectural features of each sector are not reflected. In addition to that, national support through R&D projects is found not to have a complementary relation to corporate R&D investment.
The government should make an effort to establish a strategic investment plan through R&D projects that reflect each feature of the LCD production process. The government has supported R&D projects based on each ministry’s independent plan, not based on the features of the industry itself. In the future, the government should strategically invest its R&D budget according to each detailed feature of the LCD industry. From a methodological aspect, it uses industry value chain to analyze the structure of the LCD industry and national R&D projects based on the architectural theory.
한국의 LCD 산업 분석은 ‘엘지디스플레이(주)’, ‘삼성디스플레이(주)’와 같이 완제품을 생산하는 대기업들을 중심으로 이루어져 왔다. 하지만 LCD 패널이 완성되기 위해서는 여러 소재, 부품, 장비가 필요하고 이와 연관된 공급 기업들의 역할이 중요하다. 특히 LCD 산업은 여러 소재와 부품이 단계별로 결합되어야만 완전한 제품이 만들어지는 특성을 지니고 있기 때문에 더욱 그러하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 LCD 산업 밸류 체인에 기반하여 각 공정별로 산업 플레이어와 정부 R&D 과제 분포를 파악하고, 이를 아키텍처론적 관점에서의 LCD 공정별 특징과 비교하여 정부의 LCD 산업 지원 특성을 분석하였다. LCD 산업은 밸류 체인에 기반하여 크게 Fab 공정, Module 공정, LCD 공정 장비 세 가지로 구분하였다.
그 결과 LCD 산업 플레이어들의 경우 아키텍처론 관점에서의 각 공정별 특징을 반영하여 분포되어 있는 모습을 보였으나, 정부 R&D 과제의 경우 아키텍처론적 특징과 연관성을 보이지 않았다. 따라서 정부 R&D 과제는 LCD 산업의 공정별 특징이 고려되지 않고 지원되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 정부 R&D 과제를 통한 투자는 기업 자체 R&D 투자와 상보적인 관계를 보이지 않았다.
따라서 정부는 LCD 산업의 세부 공정별 특징에 부합하는 R&D 투자 계획을 수립하여 연구개발비를 투자하려는 노력을 해야 한다. 지금까지는 각 정부부처에서 동시다발적으로 R&D 과제를 발주했다면 앞으로는 밸류 체인별 세부 특징을 고려한 전략적인 투자를 해야 한다. 또한 본 연구는 산업 밸류 체인과 아키텍처 이론을 기반으로 하여 LCD 산업 구조와 정부 R&D 과제를 연계하여 LCD 산업을 분석하고 이를 종합하여 정부의 LCD 산업 지원 특성을 분석하였다는 방법론적 측면에서 의의가 있다.
