The theory of wetting transparency of graphene claimed by Rafiee et al. received significant attention, suggesting various potential applications. However, the discussion on the validity of the theory is still ongoing. In this paper, we propose a theory including two previously regarded factors which is vital to explain the origin of the partial wetting transparency of the graphene, and the existing experimental results. We reveal that the bulk modulus of the liquid must be considered to accurately calculate the adhesion energy between the liquid and the substrate or the graphene, and that various contact models and wetting modes should be applied to understand the wettability of graphene on the substrate with rough surface. In addition, we show that the effect of the substrate on the wettability vanishes if more than two graphene layers are located. Our study provides a more developed theory to understand the wetting transparency of the graphene, and can be applied to predict the wettability of the substrate covered by graphene as well as other atomically thin coatings.
