This thesis examines the urban experience of individual game developers in Pangyo Techno Valley. The spatial structure of the Valley, which reflects how the characteristics of the Korean game industry, shapes how the game developers move in and around the Valley and how they interact with one another. My ethnographic data reveals that interactions across corporate boundaries―physically and institutionally―hardly occur. Self-confined buildings, equipped with various kinds of amenities, discourage the use of public sphere in the Valley. Current market conditions and the structure of the Korean game industry pose obstacles to the sharing of information about their product development. Moreover, only a small number of the game developers can afford to live in nearby residential area, thus resulting in long commute hours and little interaction after business hours. Although they share a sense of occupational community, it has not yet led to conscious effort to build collectivity. This thesis contributes to urban studies and innovation studies, highlighting the importance of urban settings and social interactions in understanding the success and failure of clusters.
본 논문은 도시에 대한 사회과학적 관점을 통해 판교테크노밸리를 바라본다. 특히 그 곳에서 근무하는 게임 개발자들의 도시 경험에 주목하며, 산업클러스터의 성공과 실패에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인으로 도시 구성원의 상호 교류를 제시한다. 많은 수의 게임 개발자들이 모여 있음에도 불구하고 상호 교류는 거의 나타나지 않았다. 그 이유는 크게 3가지로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 그들의 주거지는 판교 외부의 상이한 곳에 위치하여 업무 시간 외에 일어날 수 있는 사적 교류의 기회가 차단되어 있다. 둘째, 시장 경쟁과 장르의 단순화로 인해 비밀주의가 증가하고 있다. 셋째, 판교의 게임 회사들은 사옥 안에 다양한 복지 시설을 갖추고 있어 개발자들을 공적 영역으로부터 분리한다. 본 연구는 기업을 중심으로 하는 클러스터 분석을 보완하기 위하여 게임산업의 원동력이 되는 개발자들의 경험과 시각에 초점을 두며, 지리적 집중 이외에 어떠한 공간적, 사회적 요인이 클러스터의 성장에 영향을 미치는지를 보았다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
