The mobility of a channelized debris flow mainly determined using basal shear resistance is influenced by the variation of basal pore pressure due to topographic and entrainment effects. Therefore, the estimation of the basal shear resistance and the prediction of rheological characteristics with a clear theoretical basis are essential to quantitatively assess the hazard in a specific location. However, quantifying and physically explaining the rheological processes are often quite challenging due to its interrelationship with other phenomenon like entrainment, hydroplaning or turbulence.
DAN3D, a continuum dynamic run-out model for debris flow and rapid landslides, is designed to incorporate innovative features including the various rheological models and entrainment mechanism. However, it’s capability for predictive modeling is quite limited due to the lack of experimental tests or constitutive relationships for the estimation of rheological parameters and the growth rate.
Thus, with the objective of predictive debris flow modeling through appropriate rheological model identification and database development, this research attempts to apply a stochastic method for the same. The study is conducted in three stages; firstly, three rheological models were applied in Mt. Woomyeon to determine the most pertinent model through the comparison of best calibrated parameters. After the initial filtering of the rheological models in stage one, the rheological parameter database was established by conducting back analysis using an inventory of 37 previous debris flow events in Gyeonggi province of Korea. Finally in third stage, the calibrated parameter database was used to determine probability density function (PDF), and the predictive run-out modeling was conducted through random sampling of rheological parameters using Monte Carlo Simulation.
The stepwise implementation of the probabilistic analysis method for estimation of rheological parameters has been shown to be a suitable method for fast and effective debris flow predictive modelling to demarcate the hazard prone areas.
