Ultrashort pulse lasers are widely applicable in various fields of science and industry such as pump-probe spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography (OCT), terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), telecommunications, and etc. Furthermore, fiber lasers that are mode-locked by single-wall nanotube saturable absorbers (SWNT-SAs) exhibit distinct practical advantages including mechanical and environmental robustness, and polarization insensitivity. However, it is known that the stretched pulse mode-locking operation and ultrashort pulse generation with a broad spectral width is difficult to obtain using SWNT-SAs.
In this thesis, it is shown that the erbium doped fiber (EDF) with a low inversion rate brings forth a large gain bandwidth, facilitating ultrashort pulse generation. This is due to the more stabilized conditions for the generation of short pulses, such as high cavity energy or near-zero dispersion. The gain bandwidth-dependent pulse stability of a mode-locked laser is investigated by numerical analysis. The low inversion rate of the EDF broadens the gain bandwidth and decreases the effect of spectral filtering, and thus, the ultrashort pulse with a large spectral bandwidth is obtained at a near-zero net dispersion region even with a low modulation depth of a saturable absorber.
In the experiment, a SWNT-sodium-carboxymethylcellulose (Na-CMC) composite film was fabricated as a saturable absorber. The optical properties of the SWNT-SA in the long wavelength band (L-band, 1600 nm)-wavelengths generated from EDF with a low inversion rate ? are compared with those in the conventional band (C-band, 1550 nm)-wavelengths generated from EDF with a high inversion rate-in terms of the absorbance spectrum and power-dependent transmittance. Two types of mode-locked lasers operating in the C-band and L-band are designed, and demonstrate that the low inversion rate operation enhances the pulse stability which is an important parameter for ultrashort pulse generation. The experimental results show similar behavior to those of the numerical analyses. An ultrashort pulse with a broad spectral width is generated and a stable performance is confirmed. The designed stretched-pulse L-band laser has a net dispersion of $0.004-ps^2$ and generates ultrashort (92 fs), broad spectrum (47 nm) pulses with a signal-to-noise ratio over 70 dB.
The designed mode-locked laser with an ultrashort pulse width is applied to a fiber-based THz-TDS system. The pulse is amplified with low spectral modulation and used to generate and detect terahertz pulses. For practical applications, we address averaging and signal processing techniques to suppress the noise contained in fast scanned terahertz signals.
