The problem of retaining soil is one of the oldest problems in geotechnical engineering and some of the earliest and most fundamental principles of soil mechanics were developed to allow for rational design of earth retaining structures. Therefore, their design for static and seismic loading has always been an important subject in geotechnical engineering. Semi-gravity retaining wall (e.g. inverted T-shape cantilevered wall) is the combination of gravity and cantilever type of retaining wall. Its cross-section is less than gravity type, but the soil weight above the wall base is substituted for reduced weight of gravity wall.
In engineering practice, the dynamic earth pressure that is the most important compo-nent in the seismic design, is conventionally evaluated using the pseudo-static approach. The seismically induced lateral earth pressure on retaining structures was initially investigated in the 1920s, generally known as the Mononobe-Okabe method, which considers earthquake loads as pseudo-static loading. Even through the Mononobe-Okabe methods are easy to use in practice for seismic design, they have apparent discrepancies between the assumptions and the real behavior, such as the rigid behavior of soil wedges and plane-failure surfaces. In addi-tion, pseudo-static methods consider maximum transient seismic loading as steady static load-ing. Despite the confusion about the distribution of the dynamic earth pressure, most engi-neers designing retaining walls consider an inverted triangular shape for the dynamic earth pressure in practice. Moreover, pseudo-static methods suppose that all inertial forces of the soil wedge are applied simultaneously along the wall height, and ignore the interaction be-tween the wall and the soil. Therefore, a comprehensive study of the dynamic earth pressure on retaining wall is required.
This study investigated seismic behavior of retaining wall through experiments using a geotechnical centrifuge. Numerical studies were also conducted to simulate the test results and to perform parametric study. The thesis consists of three main subjects: 1) Effects of wall flex-ibility on dynamic earth pressure, 2) Seismic behavior of inverted T-shape retaining wall lo-cated on the soil layer, and 3) Parametric study using numerical analysis.
In order to investigate the magnitude and distribution of the dynamic earth pressure, measured dynamic earth pressures were compared with analytical estimation used in practice. In addition, finite difference analyses were carried out and validated through the centrifuge test results. In order to investigate the effect of wall flexibility and wall height, parametric studies were conducted. Despite the inherent limitations of numerical analysis, computed re-sults using FLAC analysis is able to qualitatively capture qualitatively the essential system re-sponses observed in the centrifuge experiments. Based on the results, the problems in domes-tic seismic design codes are raised. Finally, recommendations for existing domestic seismic design methods for retaining wall are suggested.
