An experimental study on the dynamic characteristics of pulsating combustor is carried out.
To find the physical process of pulsating combustor, the pressure fluctuation and species molar concentration in the combustion chamber are respectively measured by Piezotype pressure transducer and Gas-chromatography.
Pulsating combustion patterns are also visualized by cinematography at 100 FPS.
Results are as follows ;
1. Practical pulsating frequency could be predicted by Helmholtz resonant frequency which is calculated from the acoustic theory using the hot gas temperature in the combustion chamber.
2. The shape of pressure fluctuation in the combustion chamber depends strongly on the mutual correlation of flapper valve weight and intake fluid pressure.
3. The successful combustion of pulsating combustor is determined by physical processes such as turbulent mixing characteristics of the fuel, air and combustion gas.
4. Combustion process in the combustion chamber are mainly premixed flame with high turbulent flow field. So, there is not one dimensional standing combustion wave in the main combustion chamber.
