The alkylation of ethylbenzene and toluene was studied over shape-selective ZSM-5 type zeolite catalyst.
Xylene isomers produced from methylation of toluene gave a near thermodynamic equilibrium composition containing 28% of the para-isomer.
However, ethyltoluene and ethylbenzene isomers produced from alkylation of ethylbenzene showed the relatively high para-selectivity containing 45%, 67% of the para-isomer.
In the alkylation of ethylbenzene and toluene, parasubstituted products are produced preferentially and among its products the para-selectivity increased with increasing size of the molecules, namely in the order, xylene, ethyltoluene, diethylbenzene.
Cation exchange decreased overall ethylbenzene conversion due to reduction in the acidic properties but increased the para-selectivity primarily due to a reduction in effective pore size.
