Solution annealed SEN(single edge notched) specimen was subjected to cyclic plastic deformation with different maximum stress hold time 1.5sec, 9.5sec, 28sec respectively in 3.5pct neutral NaCl solution.
As hold time increases crack initiation becomes fast but crack propagation rate decreased by crack branching and crack tip blunting.
Variation of corrosion potential of a specimen during a single cycle of stress has also been measured and this has direct relation with a strain rate variation.
All these demonstrate the importance of strain-assisted dissolution in corrosion fatigue.
