Macroreticular film of polystyrene crosslinked by divinylbenzene was prepared and incorporated with sulfonic ion at the benzene ring. This synthetic polystyrene sulfonic acid resin was capable of exchanging the cation, and catalyzing the reactions enhanced by acidic ion.
The properties as ion exchanger and catalyst, swelling ratio, water content, ion exchange capacity, internal surface area, and pore sized distribution was measured. The characteristics of sulfonation reaction was investigated. The catalytic activity of the film type catalyst was investigated by reaction of methyl-tert-butyl-ether synthesis.
