Reaction of carboxylic acids with equimolar amounts of alkyl chloroformates and triethylamine in the presence of a catalytic amount of 4-N, N-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) affords the corresponding esters in high yields without the formation of the symmetrical anhydride in most carboxylic acids. The reaction proceeds rapidly and smoothly in methylene chloride at 0℃.
However, the formation of the symmetrical acid anhydride as a minor product is observed in the esterification of aromatic carboxylic acids. Also, it is found that increment of the amount of DMAP drastically decreases the formation of symmetrical acid anhydride.

카르복실 산을 알킬 크로로포르메이트와 트리에틸아민과 DMAP촉매 존재하에서 반응시켜 온화한 조건에서 높은 수율로 에스테르를 얻는 방법을 연구하였다.
카르복실 산이 1차, 2차인 경우에는 짧은 시간내에 매우 높은 수율로 에스테르가 얻어졌으며, 방향족 카르복실 산의 경우에는 DMAP의 양에 따라 에스테른의 수율이 증가했으며, 카르복실 산과 같은 당량의 DMAP를 사용하여 매우 높은 수율로 에스테르를 얻을 수 있었다. 그러나 3차의 카르복실산의 경우에는 DMAP를 증가시켜도 수율이 낮았으며, 입체장애가 매우 큰 2,4,6-트리 메틸 벤젠 카르복실 산의 경우에는 에스테르가 생기지 않는 반면, 산 무수물이 정량적으로 얻어졌다.
