This study focuses on two objects.
First, it investigates the relationship with organizational environment and organization structure in Korean manufacturing departments.
Second, it investigates which variable of environmental complexity or dynamism has predominent effects on the organization structure in Korean manufacturing department. Thirteen hypoyhesis are delineated to the above objects. Data were gathered from 30 manufacturing departments in Seoul through interviews, observations, and questionaires. The dimensions of organization structure-centralization and formalization, coordination mode-were measured by Hage & Aiken's and Van de ven's multi item scales.
Before data analysis, item analysis and factor analysis were conducted for the check of the reliability and construct validity of Hage & Aiken's, and Van de Ven's scales in Korean manufacturing departments.
Data were analyzed through correlation and regression analysis. The results show that organizational environment has a indirect relationship with whole dimensions of organization structure-centralization, formalization, coordination mode, and communication pattern-in the manufacturing department. Environmental complexity has a indirect relationship with the dimensions of organization structure-centralization. On the other hand, environmental dynamism has a indirect relationship with the dimensions of organization structure-coordination mode, and communication pattern.
On the formalization dimension of organization structure, Complexity and dynamism show equivalent effects.
In conclusion, this study attempts to give a data-base for the study of the characteristics of organization structure in Korean manufacturing departments.
