The importance of the role of supervision as the firstline of management is well known in manufacturing industry. In service industry in general and in the primary health care field in particular, the importance of supervisor's role is less well known. The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of two different types of supervision of the health and medical care utilization of households. It is hoped that the results of the study offer some new insights into how supervision may be utilized more effectively for primary health care in rural Korea.
The model is as follows;

The data has been collected from the two myons of Gang-Weon province in 1981 and 1982. About 300 households have been drawn by random sampling in each myon. The response rate was 99.0% for one myon and 94.7% for another in 1981. It was 93.3% and 98.3% respectively in 1982.
For preliminary analysis, frequency distributions and t-tests are used. Multiple regressions are used to test the central hypothesis that different types of supervision exert different effects on the utilization of health services.
Compared with the supervision of which main function is monitoring the activities of health workers, the supervision of which function is monitoring, control and evaluation appears to entice a greater degree of utilization of health care. This conclusion, however, should be taken with caution because the above conclusion differs according to the type of health care of which utilization is compared.
