The methanation reaction of carbon monoxide was investigated using the nickel catalysts supported on silica. The reaction kinetics and the effect of addition of potassium as a promoter were analyzed. It was confirmed that the addition of potassium suppressed the chemisorption of hydrogen while it promoted that of carbon monoxide. The overall rate depended upon the hydrogen partial pressure by positive order of 0.6~0.9, and upon the carbon monoxide partial pressure by negative order of -0.7∼0.1.
