The purposes of this study are to improve the capability of analyzing and designing mobile crane boom, and, hence to help Korean manufacturers build the cranes of their own model.
A stress analysis is carried out for an existing mobile crane boom of welded lattice type in order to evaluate the stress level and safety factor of each member of the boom. The boom is assumed to be a steel structure consisting of beams, trusses and thin plates for computational modeling.
On the basis of those informations from the stress analysis, a mobile crane boom is designed according to AISC Specification and SAE Recommended Practice. The size of the main chord is considered as design variables and the trial-and-error method is adopted for the design. Weight comparisons between the existing and the newly designed crane booms are given.
