The demand for using the computer in music research by music theoriests, historians, performers, and composers has ever been increased since the advent of computer system.
This thesis is mainly concerned with the design of a music information retrieval system (MIRES) which can retrieve any musical scores via multiple keys like composer, title, genre, source, and opening melody.
To this end, it presents encoding process which translates music notation into computer readable form, and decoding process which produces an output in such a convenient format to musicologists. The music data base employed in the MIRES is structured to permit additions, changes, deletions of any repertories of music through interactive display terminal. The MIRES is implemented in NEC S-100/80.
