This study deals with the development of an automated computer optimization procedure for the design of stage enclosure for performers. The ray tracing technique based on the modified method of images is used to analyze acoustical characteristics at any locations of performers in the stage enclosure.
Four merit functions quantifying the ease of ensemble for performers are developed from a set of design criteria. The total summation of merit functions at each location of performers is used as an objective function for the optimization procedure. The gradient search technique is employed to find the geometric parameters which maximize objective function with some constraints limiting maximum and minimum size of stage enclosure.
As an example, optimal stage enclosure for the trio chamber music is obtained using the computer program developed. The result shows that considerable improvement in its acoustical merit could be achieved by optimization of stage enclosure.
