The optimal shape for a minimum weight design of a stainless steel stem in Total Hip Prosthesis was analytically investigated.
The constraints considered are stresses in bone and stem and design variable constraints on the size of the stem. Also considered is the optimal shape for minimum stress in the cement near the proximal part to prohibit loosening.
The total hip prosthesis is modeled as two simple beams connected by simply distributed spring representing the cement layer.
The analysis program is incorporated in GPOD2, a program package for optimization of distributed parameter system based on a generalized steepest descent method.
An appropriate equivalent spring constant was determined and checked from a model study of the cross section of the total hip prosthesis.
The optimal shape of stem was found to be thinner in its distal part and thicker in its proximal part than those of commercial stems.
