Normalization and functional dependency augmented with multivalued dependency are the central notions of the relational data model. But these concepts do not give satisfiable indication to the representation of the real world. Furthermore 4NF does not remove data redundancy completely.
In order to resolve these problems we introduce new concepts of dependency : primitive dependency and derived dependency. The grouping process is also suggested to remove the data redundancy.
Normalization과 FD 및 MVD는 relational data model의 가장 핵심적인 개념들이다. 그러나 이러한 개념들은 현실세계를 어떻게 표현할 것인가 하는 문제에 대한 해답을 주지는 못했다. 이 논문에서는 먼저 이 문제에 대한 분석을 하고 또한 현재 가장 잘 알려진 4NF가 data redundancy를 완전히 제거하지 못한다는 것을 보여주었다.
이러한 문제점들을 해결하기 위해 우리는 primitive dependency 및 derived dependency의 개념을 도입하여 모든 가능한 4NF들 중에서의 decomposition 선택에 부분적인 지표를 주었고, data redundancy를 제거하기 위해 grouping process를 소개했으며, 이들 새로 소개된 개념들이 relational schema desiqn에 어떻게 응용될 수 있는가를 보여주었다.
